Meet Michelle. A twelve-year-old girl who experiences visual and auditory hallucinations after experiencing a set a traumas. How she sees herself, compared to how others see her.

Day One: Right

Curiosity
calls her to come play
out from dull darkness
into the light.

With each breath taken,
sea-salt satiates
empty, dark spaces
calling fourth life.

Eyes flutter open
to high definition
eye-popping color
combinations.

Low-bellowing calls
lure Michelle to rise
out of deep slumber
into dream land.

A safe-haven place
built upon wishes
in lands far away,
harbored and safe.

A land created
on thought at a time
with the love and help of
a grandmother.

Who seemed to teach her
to overlap dreams
with reality—
magic vision.

But there are sometimes
when real life is too much
a respite needed—
a vacation.

“You know you can not
stay here forever.”
A small, logical
voice does descend

from a palm-leaf tree top
perched just right outside
a bedroom widow
of a tree house.

Yawing and stretching
Michelle rolls over
and then rolls her eyes at
her friend, the owl.

“It’s jut for a bit,”
Michelle replies back.
“Let the day begin,”
she says and smiles.
